Coin Purse Keychain

Whip up this simple coin purse keychain and use it to carry extra cash, lip balm, or necessities – it also makes a perfect gift!

Sewing scraps are piling up here in my house and just when I have them all sorted out, they come back to haunt me some more.

I think haunt might be an overstatement — I literally have them tucked in every area of the house. Needless to say I’m always looking for fun ways to use them up. My oldest daughter started making zipper pouches in the fall of 2018… and gradually moved to other projects.

This coin purse keychain is super easy to make with just a 2 pieces of fabric scraps, a zipper, and basic sewing machine with thread. Think you can handle that? It’s definitely doable!

Coin Purse Keychain 

To make this coin purse keychain, gather the following items:

• 6×9 piece of fabric
• 2×6 piece of matching fabric
• metal swivel clasp 
• 9″-12″ zipper

Lay out your fabric right side up, zipper down with the pull to the left. Center the zipper, with the top edge lined up with the top of the fabric.

With your zipper foot, sew a straight stitch along the top seam, allowing a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Trim the loose thread, then flip the zipper right side up.  Fold the bottom of the fabric up towards the top, lining the top of the fabric with the top of the zipper.

(Zipper should be face up with the pull to the left).

Sew along the top, allowing a 1/4″ seam allowance. 

Then, pull out your fabric (2×6) and lay it right side down. Fold each end in to the middle, and then fold once more to make a thin strip. Sew down the middle with a straight stitch.

Slip that small piece through the clasp, then hold both ends towards the bottom. The clasp end is going to get stuffed in the side of the coin purse, with the two ends sticking out ever-so-slightly.

Pin into place.

Before you close each side with a straight stitch, open up the zipper – it’ll allow you to flip it here soon.

Then sew a straight stitch down each side, making sure to backstitch at the beginning and end. The ends of the key ring should be sticking out of one side — just trim each side once you are done sewing the straight stitch.

That’s it!

Now you can clip that to your purse, or zipper pull and use it to carry extra change or cash.
