Having a baby is a wonderful time for women ~ the ability to give birth to a little person is absolutely incredible.  While celebrating though, we also have a great deal of healing to do as well.

Birthing a child is hard work y’all – it’s definitely rewarding but can be very exhausting at the same time. In the past, women were always encouraged to take up to 7 weeks after giving birth, just to be able to recover and spend time caring for themselves and their newborn. … yet I know very few women who actually do take that time.  More times than not, we feel rushed to get back to work or we are faced with caring for multiple children that prevents us from doing everything we can to relax.

After I had my first, I was back at work less than three weeks later. Fast forward to baby five, and I struggled to get back on my feet even six weeks after giving birth.

It is so important for new moms to take that time after delivery to care for their baby, and help encourage their body to fully heal.

Postpartum Wellness: Sitz Bath Soak

One of the best ways a new mom can take care of herself after giving birth is speeding up the healing in the area where the baby made their initial appearance.  You can do this with a postpartum sitz bath soak formulated with ingredients that will encourage healing while also soothing the birth area.

You’ll want to check with your doctor or midwife before soaking , especially if you have excessive bleeding following delivery.  If given the OK from your doctor, soaking for once or twice a day is a great way to promote healthy circulation, and tissue repair, while also giving you time to relax and soothe your body following the long delivery process.

A really good sitz bath soak can increase circulation (and provide relief for hemorrhoids), promote tissue repair, relieve pain, itching and inflammation while also serving to soothe and repair skin.

While I have DIY’d many of my beauty and health products (including my DIY Perineal Spray), and incorporated essential oils in my postpartum healing, I was recently encouraged to try this Postpartum Sitz Bath Soak from Principia Medical in hopes that I would find it helpful for mammas who have just given birth.

Can I just be honest with you for a second? I absolutely loved this bath soak because it smelled incredible and left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.  Having several on hand would be wonderful for any new mom struggling to find time to care for herself after giving birth.

Creating the Perfect Postpartum Sitz Bath Soak

Leaving the house after giving birth was probably the biggest challenge I had (next to finding the time to soak in the bath), so I relied largely on Amazon to order those things that I didn’t want to venture into the store for. After all, I was not only trying to heal my body after giving birth, but I also had 4 other kids that needed my attention too – and having to drag everyone out in public was hard enough without being incredibly tired and sore.

I found recovery from giving birth got a little more difficult with each pregnancy – after having my first at the age of 26, I was 37 when I was pregnant with the last, and certainly my age made quite a difference in my energy levels and ability to recover quickly.

This Postpartum Sitz Bath Soak included some of the best ingredients to help aid the healing process for moms following delivery:

Epsom Salt: reduce swelling, draw out toxins and encourages healing.

Dead Sea Salt: provides the minerals the body needs to heal quickly.

Coconut Oil: supports healing – it’s antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial.

Witch Hazel (Alcohol free): contains tannins that can help reduce swelling and fight bacteria, which can help decrease pain and prevent infection.

Organic Oat Straw Tincture: helps support uterine pain and also works to support and nourish healthy skin repair.

Essential oils:  Tea Tree, Organic Geranium, Organic Frankincense, Ylang Ylang, and Lavender – all have unique properties that assist in soothing skin while helping support healthy tissue repair.

Not only is the sitz bath soak easy to order on Amazon (yay for delivery to the front door!), it was more than twice the size of other postpartum bath soaks that I found out there on the market.  The sitz bath soak included a scoop as well as a measuring mark on the side of the container to make measuring a breeze – no need guess how much you are putting in your hot bath, the measuring marks on the side of the container were a helpful reference.

One of my favorite things about the soak was that it included several of my favorite postpartum essential oils in a ratio that was uplifting without being overly powering.

How to Use the Principia Medical Postpartum Sitz Bath Soak

Dissolve 2 C. of sitz bath soak in a warm bath using the scoop included in the product package. Reference the measurement guide located on the side of the bottle.  Soak for at least 20 minutes.

Or, combine 1 C. of Principia Medical Postpartum Bath Soak in a sitz bath (find at your local drugstore).

Have you used a sitz bath to aid in your postpartum recovery? If so, what essential oils did you find to be the most helpful?
