Homemade Baby Wash & Shampoo

Essential Oils

Homemade Baby Wash & Shampoo

Chances are.. if you have small children, you may prefer to make their own baby shampoo and body wash instead of purchasing the varieties in store (which often contain some pretty harsh and unnecessary ingredients).

This homemade baby wash and shampoo is non-toxic, and sulfate free – it’s great to use on littles and very gentle on their skin.

In some cases, you would pay as much as $12 in store for a bottle of body wash that is safe on your children – but it’s really easy to make your own, not to mention you can control what goes in it and save at the same time.  Compared to buying in store, the homemade version is so much cheaper and easier to whip together.

This is our favorite recipe – we have been using this for a while, and you can use it on all of your kids, not just the baby.  In fact, we have several bottles – one without Essential Oils (for the baby) and one with Essential Oils (for the older kids)… it truly is a huge savings versus buying products in store. The foaming pump makes it effortless to use and it lasts 3 weeks (for the 4 older kids, ages 2, 4, 6 and 9).

Just a note: Dr. Bronner’s Baby Mild is not 100% tear free – but we are diluting it quite a bit in this recipe … it has always been great on my kids (even our 2 year old), but you should always use caution just in case.

This recipe fills a 12 oz bottle – you can add Essential Oils if you wish (recommend 5-6 drops)… if you want to see homemade skin care recipes for body wash HERE, and HERE as well as moisturizing face wash HERE, too.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 C. Liquid Castile Soap (we use THIS)
  • 2 Tbsp Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1/8 tsp Vitamin E Oil
  • 1 tsp Vegetable Glycerin
  • 2/3 – 1 C. Distilled Water (start small, and increase as needed)
  • If using only as a body wash, then add 2 tsp Almond or Grapeseed Oil

To make:  Add all ingredients and mix together well; pour into foaming dispenser.

What Oils to Use?

If you are adding essential oils, I would suggest staying away from Citrus oils (ie. Lemon, Lime, Citrus Fresh, Orange)… and I would personally stick with Lavender or Gentle Baby – which are both great for the skin.

We keep the baby wash & shampoo pump free of oils …    but the 4 older children (2, 4, 6 and 9) will often times pick Lavender or Gentle Baby, although our 9 year old loves Patchouli, too.

Homemade Baby Wash & Shampoo

We are passionate about using Young Living Oils – you can read more about that HERE.   I personally lean towards a company that grows their own plants & trees on farms that are theirs (NOT outsourced)… has both in-house AND third party testing, and doesn’t use any synthetic chemicals or pesticides on their plants.

I also love a company who has opened up their farms ANY time – that’s transparency at it’s best.
