DIY Halloween Balloon Wreath

Halloween is just around the corner and decorations have been up in store for quite a few weeks.   

A few weeks ago when we were in the 99 Only store picking up balloons for this balloon wreath my kids made for Labor Day, one of them mentioned making a Halloween wreath for their cousins up north in Minnesota.

Hmm… wonder if we could? 

It’s made in somewhat of the same way… and I know they miss their cousins dearly, so hey… sure, lets do this.  20 packs of balloons, a straw wreath and a few other random decorations later, we were well on our way to getting this project done.

For several days, I picked up balloons in every corner of the house and even found them under the sink. Anyone who didn’t know our kids would have thought this was the first time they had ever been introduced to balloons…

Seriously – I never thought I’d despise balloons so much as this particular week. They were literally all, over, the, place. 

But as the week rolled on, we got it done and I might just say it looks super cute. We started by knotting some string on the top of the wreath so we could hang it when we were done.  Then, we blocked the wreath in colors – black, purple, black and purple… we had a few orange balloons so we left those for one small area of the wreath.

(It’s hard to see that below because the orange bow covers it up).

 

We bunched up 3-4 balloons at a time and stuck them into the wreath using floral pins we picked up at Michael’s in the floral department – I think we used just over 2 boxes.  Once we were done, we used the same floral pins to “pin” the witch’s feet to the back of the wreath, and pin the bow to the top of the wreath, too.

We left the back of the wreath without balloons – but we did make sure to use enough balloons on the wreath so that when you look at it from the side you can see “balloons” and not the straw wreath. As the wreath sits on the door, you can’t see the back so we figured it was a cheaper option than using balloons on every available space.

It really was pretty easy – my kids worked in shifts. The oldest started with black and once she was done with her block, the next oldest had their turn until all 4 kids were done – obviously an infant can’t pin balloons on a straw wreath so she toddled around picking up balloons on the floor and handing them out randomly to the others. ?

We’ll share our best tip for making this wreath:  

• Balloons at the 99 Only store are 20-25 ct bags for $.99
• Balloons at the Dollar Tree are 15 ct bags for $1.00 (so slightly smaller) 

Wherever you opt to pick up your balloons, get all of your balloons from that place – because the shade of purple at Dollar Tree may be a slightly different shade of purple than the purple at 99 Only Store.

DIY Halloween Balloon Wreath

What you’ll Need:

• 1 12″ Straw Wreath (approx. $3 at Michael’s)
• 5-6 bags of each Black and Purple Balloons
• 2-3 bags of Orange Balloons (optional)
• 1 Halloween Bow ($.99 store or Dollar Store)
• 1 set of Witch’s Feet ($.99 store or Dollar Store)
• 3 boxes of Floral Pins (approx. $2 at Michael’s)
• 1 piece of twine, 12″ in length (for hanging the wreath)

To make:

1. Start by using your twine to tie a knot on your straw wreath so that it can be hung on a wreath hook once complete.
2. Working in blocks, pin 3-4 balloons at a time with floral pins – work from front to side.  Back is not required unless of course you feel that it’s necessary, but make sure you can only see balloons when you are looking at the wreath from the side.
3. Once you have done the color blocks around the wreath, pin the Halloween bow near the top, and the witch’s feet on the back of the wreath. 
4. Take a look at your wreath to make sure that the straw can’t be seen from the sides and if needed, stuff a few more balloons in spaces that need more attention.
