August is always such a timely month – it marks the (almost) near end of the long summer vacation, as Labor Day quickly approaches and the cooler fall weather sets in.
Kids all over the country have spent the last few weeks home keeping busy outside, going to the kids movies, or even taking a vacation to see family and friends. Our kids have spent considerable time this summer making laundry basket race cars, spraying each other with the water house and throwing plants down with their mamma in the backyard.
Our kids have been looking for fun ways to decorate the house this Labor Day, and this cute wreath is SO stinkin’ easy to do, that all your kids will want to make one for family and friends.
Get started by picking up a straw wreath at your nearest Hobby Lobby or Michael’s Craft Store – be sure to use a coupon (the size we used was just over $3.50 before the coupon was applied). Then drive over to your local dollar store and pick up as many balloons as you can.
Don’t underestimate the number of balloons – be generous, and pick up at least 7 bags of each color. You’ll definitely use them all – and the more you buy the more each of your kids can help chip in on the project.
Try not to unwrap the straw wreath – if you have kids, they might try to take off the plastic like they did on mine. If yours do, it’s not a huge worry, but you’ll just have straw to clean up when you are done.
Using your floral pins, pin 3-4 balloons at a time around the front and sides of the wreath – you can definitely go all out and do the entire straw wreath but that would require more balloons.
Decorate your front door when you are done to showcase your work!
What you’ll need:
- 10″ Straw Wreath
- Red balloons
- White balloons
- Blue balloons
- Floral pins (2-3 packs)
- 18″ piece of ribbon for hanging
Helpful tips to remember:
- When selecting balloons, make sure you over-buy rather than under buy. If you are close to a Dollar Tree, you can get a 15 ct solid color bag of balloons for $1. Whereas if you shop at the 99 Only store, you can get 20 balloons for $1.
- If you start picking up balloons at the Dollar Tree, just make sure you that you continue to buy them from the Dollar Tree because the shades can be different store to store.
- Floral pins can be found at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby and are in the floral section – if you pick up with a coupon they run just under $1.50 per box of 50.
To make:
- Lay out your straw wreath and keep the plastic covering on. Block out sections by marker for red, white and blue.
- Cut a piece of ribbon 18″ in length. Tie the end, then loop through the wreath and tighten to secure. Now you are ready to start pinning your balloons!
- Take 3-4 balloons at a time, and secure with a floral pin in the designated area.
- Continue to go around the wreath – placing balloons on the back is not required, but when the wreath is hanging on the door, make sure you pin the balloons far enough around the sides so that you don’t see straw when you walk up on the wreath from the side.
Enjoy your new creation! If you are using this outside, I would refrain from putting in an area that may get wet when it rains – otherwise, this wreath stores wonderfully as long as you are gentle in putting it away.
