Whipped Tallow Magnesium Body Butter

DIY

Moisturizing Whipped Tallow Magnesium Body Butter with the benefit of magnesium oil within – completely natural, homemade, calming DIY body butter

Tallow Magnesium Body Butter

This DIY Whipped Tallow Magnesium Body Butter is a great way to nourish and moisturize while also getting some magnesium into your skin.

Whipped Tallow Body Butter is quite easy to make at home. It results in the lightest, fluffiest, body butter that’s great for skin.

Why Tallow?

Grass-fed tallow is wonderful for skin. Not only is it great for aging, it’s also rich in antioxidants, and is easily absorbed. It’s rich in vitamin A, D, E and K, and closely resembles the human skin cell structure.

Tallow contains 50-55% saturated fat (just like our cell membranes) and is very similar to our own skin’s sebum.  Whipped tallow body butter is a must for summer shorts season.   My legs (though not as skinny as I’d like!) are wonderfully moisturized.

Benefits of Magnesium

Magnesium is critical for your body – it’s involved in more than 600 reactions in your body, including:

  • Energy creation: Magnesium helps convert food into energy
  • Protein formation: it helps create new proteins from amino acids
  • Gene maintenance: Magnesium helps create and repair DNA and RNA
  • Muscle movements: Magnesium is part of the contraction and relaxation of muscles
  • Nervous system regulation: Magnesium helps regular neurotransmitters, which send messages throughout your brain and nervous system

Unfortunately, studies suggest that most people in the US and Europe get less than the daily recommendation of magnesium.

Tallow Magnesium Body Butter

WHIPPED TALLOW BODY BUTTER

This whipped tallow body butter is simple to make and incredibly moisturizing – scent with your favorite essential oil or leave unscented!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 C. rendered beef tallow
  • 3 Tbsp. avocado oil
  • 1 Tbsp. shea butter
  • 1 Tbsp. beeswax pellets (affiliate link)
  • 1/2 C. magnesium oil
  • 10 drops essential oils (Lavender would be wonderful!)

For a step by step tutorial on how to render tallow, check out this post here.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Using a double broiler, or a glass bowl on top of simmering water, gently heat the first 4 ingredients on low until melted.

Remove the bowl from the heat. Allow to cool on the countertop (I place a piece of plastic wrap or lid over the bowl or saucepan).  You want it to remain soft, but not “hard” (I try to avoid using the fridge or freezer as it makes it too hard too quickly, and then doesn’t whip properly).

Once the mixture has cooled and solidified to a soft set, use a stand or hand mixer to whip the body butter mixture until it’s light and fluffy. As you whip, slowly add the magnesium oil a little bit at a time. Continue to whip as you add the oil, to incorporate the oil successfully.

Scoop it into an airtight glass jar or tins and store away from the heat.

The beeswax helps this body butter set up very well. A little bit of this at night on your legs, arms and body goes a very long way!

To make successful Whipped Tallow Magnesium Body Butter:

  • This recipe uses beeswax as the emulsifier between the tallow (fat based) and the magnesium oil (water based) – it will not separate. If you are making this to sell or are looking to make this for long term use, you will need to use a preservative. This recipe is for short term use; while it will not separate.
  • Apply sparingly to skin as needed.

Can I use olive oil or another oil instead of avocado? I am allergic to avacadi.

Absolutely. You can use jojoba oil, or… cold pressed grapeseed, sunflower seed, etc.

    What preservative would you recommend?

Corinne, I did not use one for my magnesium body butter. If made in small batches, it will keep for up to 2 months no issues. Magnesium chloride is a salt and sort of acts as a self-preserver. I hope that helps.
