In today’s post – update your fall decor with these easy, DIY flannel pumpkins made quickly and easily with toilet paper rolls.
You may have seen these toilet paper pumpkins before. They’re everywhere… In fact, this DIY has been around longer than I have probably been alive.
Anyways, I was at JoAnn fabrics last week and the pumpkins are already out. Actually… all the Christmas decor is already out – and it’s only August. Isn’t that crazy?
Seeing pumpkins had me feeling like I needed to work on some pumpkin crafts.. and what better way than these pumpkins made with toilet paper rolls. I also remembered that I had just received my huge Amazon delivery of Presto! toilet paper so I had plenty of toilet paper .. time to make pumpkins!
Have you ever seen fabric pumpkins before? It’s such a great way to use up a really rich colored fall fabric or even a plaid flannel. Not to mention it takes just minutes.
DIY’ing doesn’t really get any easier this .. Gather up all the extra toilet rolls you have (with toilet paper of course), wrap them in a gorgeous fall fabric or plaid, stuff a stick in the top for a stem (pumpkin) and boom!
You have a fabric pumpkin.
How to Make a Toilet Paper Pumpkin
This pumpkin hardly requires any instructions – but.. safe to say we’re giving instructions to you any way. Step 1 — gather your supplies.
- Fabric: You’ll want an 18″ square of fabric for each pumpkin. You can buy a half yard from a bolt at the fabric store, which is enough for two pumpkins.
- Sticks: You’ll want one 3 -4 inch stick to serve as the pumpkin stem for each pumpkin you make. Head to your local park, or look in your backyard to find one. If you can’t, then a wine cork works well to suffice. Or, go a step further and use cinnamon sticks from the grocery store.
- A pointy object: That could be a pen or a pencil… or a letter opener. You’ll want to use that to stuff the fabric in the top of the pumpkin as you wrap the pumpkin to create it.
- Ribbon or festive leaves
- Toilet Paper: I use Amazon brand Presto! rolls because they are super close to charming and they are mega rolls. Mega rolls are wider than a traditional “taller” roll making the pumpkin look more realistic. You want your pumpkins to look round and fat. Not tall and skinny.
Here’s a video that’ll step by step DIY this pumpkin so you can recreate:
Step by Step Instructions:
Lay out your fabric in a nice, flat square. Place the toilet roll smack in the center.
Unroll the toilet paper a few times, then roll it back up very loosely… when you roll it back up, do it loosely and twist it as you go (it’ll help with the round shape).
Grab the corner of the fabric and tuck it inside the pumpkin at the top and push down with your pointed object.
Repeat as needed with the other 3 corners. Then place the stick at the top in the middle of ra step and tie a ribbon around the top.
Don’t forget to try to unroll the toilet paper a few times to create that squatty pumpkin effect. Your toilet paper pumpkins will look super cute and be the perfect addition to your fall decor!
