DIY Coffee Lip Balm

DIY

The ultimate gift for any coffee lover, this coffee lip balm holds the scent of freshly-brewed coffee with ingredients that are lush for lips!

Coffee Lip Balm

I haven’t quite met anyone who doesn’t have an infatuation with coffee.    For some, coffee is the best (and needed) way to start their day.

If hot coffee isn’t your thing, then you might prefer iced coffee – fresh brew, over ice, with a little added sweetened condensed milk.  I’ll even admit that I might like iced coffee better than hot coffee.

Who am I kidding though? All coffee is delicious.

This coffee lip balm combines simple, skin-loving ingredients to make a lip balm that’s truly incredible for lips. It smells like coffee.. making it the perfect gift for the coffee lover. Paired with coffee soap, you truly have a gift that hits home.

Making this coffee lip balm couldn’t be easier. After this DIY, you’ll have 15-16 beautiful tubes of fragrant coffee lip balm to give as gifts to those you love. Keep a few back for yourself. Put one in your purse, bathroom, bedroom… maybe even your car (as long as it’s not the middle of the summer!)

Infusing the Oil

Unrefined grapeseed oil makes a wonderful addition to lip balm. In a pint canning jar, add 1/2 C. fresh coffee grounds. Top with unrefined grapeseed oil and cover with a lid and canning ring.

You can infuse over the course of 8-10 weeks in a sunny windowsill. But if you are not willing to wait that length of time, simply place the jar in a medium saucepan filled with water on low heat. Make sure that the water in the saucepan doesn’t reach the top of the jar.

Allow the jar to simmer on the lowest of heat for 60-90 minutes. Over the course of that time, the grapeseed oil will transform into a dark brown color and take on the scent of the coffee grounds.

After that time has passed, line a mesh strainer with a clean coffee filter. Pour the oil over the filter and allow it to strain for 10-15 minutes. That coffee-infused oil is now ready to be used in all your favorite body care recipes.  You can keep that oil in a separate jar in your pantry – take care to label that jar with the date and contents of the jar.

DIY Coffee Lip Balm

Ingredients include:

  • .50 oz pastured tallow* (can substitute cocoa butter, or even unrefined shea butter)
  • 1.25 oz coffee infused unrefined grapeseed oil (see above)
  • .25 oz castor oil
  • .50 – .70 oz organic beeswax (more for a firmer lip balm)
  • Lip Balm Tubes (these are my favorite brand)

To make:

Combine the tallow, coffee infused oil, castor oil and beeswax in a glass Pyrex cup.  Place in the microwave and melt using 15-20 second intervals. Stir well between bursts.

Coffee Lip Balm DIY

Once the oils and beeswax have melted and combined, pour carefully into your lip balm tubes. Allow the tubes to sit and cool for at least one hour. Once hardened, place caps on the tubes and gift to friends and family.

(Coffee lip balm shown above uses Online Labels for professional printing. They also have Maestro label designer that’s relatively inexpensive – then you can design your own and print on your own lip balm labels you pick up from Amazon).

Can I make substitutions?

Sure you can!  I haven’t tried anything other than this reliable recipe of ingredients, above, but if you want to make changes, here are some tips.

  • Tallow: Substitute cocoa or shea butter.
  • Unrefined grapeseed oil: substitute sunflower seed oil, avocado oil or even rice bran oil.
  • Castor oil: The purpose of castor oil is to provide a little shine to the lip balm. If you would rather not use castor oil, then eliminate altogether and add .25 oz extra oil to the grapeseed oil for a total of 1.5 oz oils to .5 oz tallow.

Have you ever thought of making coffee lip balm?

Would you use coffee lip balm or would you you prefer to gift to family and friends?
