These 3-ingredient Heart Lotion Bars are a simple skincare option. Includes directions for making, packaging and recommended ingredient substitutions.
Lotion bars are one of my favorite beauty items to make (and gift!) around Valentines Day. They are so easy to throw together and make a wonderful present for girlfriends without breaking the bank!
Lotion bars use a combination of beeswax (which gives them their structure), butters and a lightweight oil to create a soothing bar that glides easily on skin. Go a step further and add your favorite skin-friendly essential oil and/or dried rose petals for effect. You’ll have a gift that anyone would be happy to receive!
Heart Lotion Bars make a wonderful last-minute Valentine gift. Combine sweet almond oil with mango butter, beeswax and geranium essential oil and the bars will be solid at room temperature. Once rubbed on skin, they melt on contact.
Heart Lotion Bars
Ingredients:
- 3.2 oz Sweet Almond Oil
- 2.4 oz White Beeswax
- 2.4 oz Mango Butter*
- Geranium or your choice of essential oil
- heart silicone mold
This heart silicone mold works wonderful for lotion bars. However, feel free to use any silicone mold that you wish.
When the lotion bars have set and are finished, you’ll want to find a way to store them for gift giving. Metal tins work wonderfully well, if picked up in the proper size. Just keep in mind that you might see oil marks on anything that is not grease resistant.
Always keep the lotion bars away from extreme temperature changes. They can get soft when left in the heat for a long period of time!
Heart Lotion Bars
Ingredients
- 3.2 oz sweet almond oil
- 2.4 oz white beeswax
- 2.4 oz mango butter
Optional:
- Geranium essential oil
Instructions
- In a heat safe measuring cup, add your beeswax and sweet almond oil and melt in the microwave using 30 second bursts.
- Add the mango butter to the hot mixture and give it time to melt. If it doesn't melt, place in the microwave for 10-12 second bursts.
- Add your Geranium essential oil and stir in thoroughly.
- Place a small pinch of rose petals in each silicone heart cavity. Use a spoon to help cover some of the petals with the oil mixture (which helps the petals stay in place). Let cool briefly, then pour the remaining oil mixture into each cavity.
- Allow the lotion bars to cool for 1-2 hours until hardened. If desired, place in the freezer to harden quickly (can sometimes prevent crystallization).
- Remove from the mold and enjoy.
Notes
- Gift in a tin or covered container. Keep away from extreme temperature changes - remember that they can get soft when kept in extreme heat.
Looking to substitute ingredients?
Don’t have mango butter? Feel free to substitute pastured tallow, cocoa butter or even unrefined shea butter.
Sweet almond oil is a very light, skin-loving oil. If you are substituting another oil, you might want to consider:
- sunflower seed oil
- apricot kernel oil
- jojoba oil
- avocado oil
- macadamia nut oil
- chia seed oil
While you can use coconut oil, the end result might be a lotion bar that’s a little more greasy than you’d like.
