Can I tell you a little secret? I absolutely LOVE chocolate – so much in fact, that I can’t keep it in the house. If I do, then I’m in BIG trouble.
I read somewhere that you crave chocolate if you are deficient in magnesium – and I don’t know how true that is.. but I have noticed that if I up my magnesium intake my cravings go away. Coincidental? I think not!
I recently picked up some cocoa butter on Amazon – and have had this DIY on my list for quite some time now. Body Butter is amazing and I love it dearly – though I’m not too eager to pay too much for it in stores, not to mention sometimes the store varieties have some crazy additives that really aren’t necessary in any body butter.
So we made our own – and it was incredibly easy. We combined cocoa butter with Orange essential oil and the result was a very beautiful, yummy smell – almost like Orange Julius. Or an orange creamsicle.
Do you want to know something?
I put this on after my shower and I just couldn’t stop smelling my arms – I wanted to lick myself silly.. but I had to refrain.
Lets move on. 😉
We need to chat about Cocoa Butter for a bit – it’s a hard vegetable fat with a distinct chocolate aroma that is extracted from the cocoa bean. The fats in cocoa butter melt and solidify at different temperatures – and that can create a gritty texture if you aren’t careful when making your beauty projects.
To prevent that gritty texture, once you melt the mixture, you want to cool it quickly to prevent those fats from solidifying at various temps.
It’s important to use a double broiler (or, set a ball canning jar in a skillet, filled with water …being careful not to get water in the jar) to melt the butter. Then, once melted, add the coconut oil (melted) and pour the mixture straight into the mixer bowl. Place that metal mixer bowl into the freezer for 18-2o minutes (to allow it to cool down together) – this will prevent that gritty feeling when you whip the body butter.
After 20 minutes, pull from the freezer & throw on the mixer – mix at the highest speed, which will allow that body butter to double in volume. Use any essential oil you wish, provided it’s for topical use.
Note: We used Orange, and it is a photosensitive oil, which means you will want to be cautious if you are going out in the sun for 12 hours after applying to uncovered skin. I feel comfortable using it in our body butter because I shower at night and apply this body butter then.
DIY Chocolate Orange Body Butter
- 1/2 C. Cocoa Butter
- 1/4 C. Coconut Oil, melted
- 20 drops Orange Essential Oil
Make the Body Butter:
- To get started, combine the cocoa butter and coconut oil in a glass jar and set inside of a skillet with 1-2″ of water. Turn the burner on low/medium and melt the contents of the jar.
- Once melted, pour the jar contents into your mixing bowl. Place that mixing bowl in the fridge and allow to cool for 15-20 minutes. Once it has cooled, pop that bowl on your KitchenAid and add 15-20 drops of your favorite topical Essential Oil. .
- Whip the contents of the mixer at the highest speed available – and watch it whip into an amazingly creamy body butter.
Store the body butter in a jar, in your bathroom – I would not recommend storing it in the kitchen or anywhere else in the house that is slightly warm (as it may melt the body butter easily).
