If there is one thing we might be picky about as parents, it’s what we apply to the skin of our little ones. We have 5.. and thankfully we didn’t have too much trouble with the typical diaper rash.
We cloth diapered the first 4… then my husband, who assumed we were done… threw my cloth diapers (gasp! I know – right?). It wasn’t until a few months later that we found ourselves expecting baby 5.. and since it was our last, we just went with disposables.
Most parents turn to Desitin with infants or toddlers in diapers – probably because it’s heavily advertised, readily available and somewhat inexpensive.
I’m definitely on the fence about commercial baby items as a whole, and have discovered that it’s just easier at this point in time to make my own items because it saves me a trip with 5 kids to a busy store – parking, toting kids in and the constant requests for stuff along the way.
Thankfully we keep most of the DIY ingredients for basic items at home – so I easily pulled out Shea, Coconut Oil, Zinc Oxide Powder and Beeswax Pellets.
I have plenty of small jars here laying around, and we rely heavily on Essential Oils for our wellness so those are at arm’s reach no matter where we are in the house.
This Baby Bottom Balm is really easy to make – a mere 5 minutes is all it takes to melt the items, pour into a container. and minutes later you can use it on your little one as needed.
The Bottom Balm contains the following:
Beeswax: Helps encourage new cell growth while also protecting the skin, locking moisture in.
Coconut Oil: Fights off infections and supports healthy skin while also serving as a deep moisturizer
Shea Butter: Moisturizes, protects, and helps support new skin growth.
Zinc Oxide: Optional.. but if used, is insoluble in water and protects the skin. Zinc will mix with the other ingredients and act as a waterproof barrier.
Lavender & Tea Tree Essential Oils: Lavender AND Tea Tree are wonderful for supporting healthy skin. The are gentle for babies, and is wonderful when added to skin care products for skin support.
This baby bottom balm is incredibly easy to make – pull out your Pyrex Measuring Cup or a simple canning jar, the ingredients and your empty container.
Baby Bottom Balm:
- 2 Tbsp Beeswax Pellets
- 3 Tbsp Coconut Oil
- 3 Tbsp Shea Butter
- 2 tsp Zinc Oxide (optional but recommended)
- 8 drops Lavender Essential Oil
- 5 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
In your glass measuring cup, add the beeswax, coconut oil and shea butter and place in the microwave for 20 second bursts until melted.
Once completely melted, remove from the microwave and allow to cool for a minute or two. Add zinc oxide (optional) and essential oils, then pour into your glass container and allow to cool. Apply as needed to affected area.
We pick up our jars at Abundant Health – you can, however, use Ball Canning Jelly Jars, too.
The bottom balm will be thick.. yet just soft enough to their bottom as needed. The beeswax gives it a firmer texture, so you can leave it sit in the bathroom or in the bedrooms without it losing its firmness.
Note: although we did incorporate essential oils, they are completely optional. If you do opt to use them in your baby bottom balm, please ensure that the oils that you are using are unadulterated, high quality essential oils.
