There’s something very very relaxing and also nostalgic about the smell of hot apple cider simmering away in a crock pot in your kitchen.

Smells are one of those things that can be an easy-relaxer for anyone struggling from anxiety. Take it from someone who is often times stressed to the max – while running and hiking definitely help, walking into a house that smells like a bakery is absolutely an incredible feeling.

When I was around the age of 8-9 years old, my parents had a family friend – we didn’t visit her often, but when we did, her house always smelled like freshly baked cookies and apple cider. It was heavenly!

Dorothy, and her husband Harry, were both farmers – and they were the epitome of Minnesota country living. Unfortunately they passed some time ago, leaving me with just memories of the delicious cookies and smells that came from their kitchen.

Simple Slow Cooker Hot Apple Cider

This simple slow cooker is so easy to make and it will make your house smell absolutely incredible. Even the neighbors may be eager to pop their head in to find out what’s cooking in your kitchen.

As for me, this recipe was a definite way to put a better mood on my oldest teenager – who struggles from seasonal anxiety disorder and frequent depression. It certainly put her in better spirits – and I think it did that because it reminded her that cooler weather is on the way (despite the hot desert heat of Arizona!)

Equipment

  • crock pot/slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 1 gal apple cider
  • 1/2 C brown sugar
  • 10 cloves
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • apple wedges or slices for presentation/garnish

Instructions

  • Pour the gallon of cider into the slow cooker.
  • Add in the brown sugar and whisk until dissolved. Add in the cloves and cinnamon sticks.
  • Cover and cook low for 2-3 hours or on high for 1-2 hours.
  • Serve warm in glasses of choice and enjoy.

Notes

Stove Top instructions:

Follow the same steps above but heat on the stove in a large pot until hot, not boiling. Allow the cider to simmer for a while before drinking and enjoy.
Notes: Can add slices of apples to the slow cooker if desired. You can also add an apple slice to the glass for serving along with a dash of cinnamon. Keep warm for serving.
