Homemade Leather Cleaner with Essential Oils

Essential Oils

Leather Cleaner with Essential Oils

Have a leather sofa that needs a good cleaning? We have 2 – and let me just say that if you have kids, a leather sofa is the way to go.

Our sofas are 10 years old and probably the BEST investment we ever made … I don’t think we’ll ever go back to cloth or suede sofas, leather has been easy to maintain and easy considering we have raised 4 kids (and have one more coming).

We have used this recipe for the last 1 1/2 years and our sofas look like new – they, however, are far from new.

Before using our Essential Oils we always used the leather cleaner sold to us at the furniture store… but once we came across this article by Bob Vila we ditched the leather cleaner in exchange for a more affordable DIY we could make at home.

Homemade Leather Cleaner

  • 1/2 C. Vinegar
  • 15-20 drops Lemon Essential Oil

To make:  Mix together in a bowl… or, use a glass spray bottle (especially since Lemon is a Citrus oil). We have these brown (glass) spray bottles here at home and they work super for mixing up our own cleaners.

To Use

  • Clean off your leather sofas with a rag – if you have lots of bits/crumbs on the sofa and down the cushions, then vacuum up well.
  • Spray the sofa with Leather Cleaner (above), and then wipe down with a clean rag.
  • Let sit 4-5 minutes, then buff off any remaining solution.

One thing to note: When using ANY leather cleaner, even commercial, different leather types may respond in different ways. Commercial leather cleaner can sometimes be a bad option for some leather sofas – so it’s always best to do a spot test on a hidden area before you use on the entire sofa just to ensure that your leather will be okay with the cleaner.

Lemon works well to prevent cracks and promote longevity of the leather… not to mention it makes the vinegar-y smell non-existent.

Why not Olive Oil? In most cases we have seen it noted that it can be drying over time.
