Get the recipe to make this delicious Garlic Butter Naan – the ultimate in comfort food and full of garlic buttery flavor!

Garlic Butter Naan

I’m a sucker for anything smothered in garlic and butter – especially bread-like items (like this Garlic Butter Naan). For me, bread is the ultimate comfort food…

And that is likely why I had to give up eating bread and carbs a few years ago and have been super successful at that (as hard as it was!)

However, that doesn’t mean that my kids don’t tear up bread rolls, sourdough and especially this Garlic Butter Naan. This naan is super easy to make and such a nice treat when you want comfort food in a hurry.

Garlic Butter Naan

Garlic Butter Naan

This Garlic Butter Naan requires just a few simple ingredients, a little time, and a generous amount of butter and garlic.  This garlic butter naan is made with the following ingredients:

  • greek yogurt
  • all purpose flour
  • warm water
  • warm milk
  • olive oil
  • baking powder and salt
  • instant rise or rapid rise yeast
  • granulated sugar

Mix up your ingredients and allow time for the dough to rise. Once it has risen, divide the dough into ten equal pieces. Lightly flour your surface and roll out the dough.

Use the reserved olive oil (2 Tbsp) and cook up each portion in your skillet. Then brush with the garlic butter and sprinkle with chopped cilantro and/or parsley.

Can you make Naan with Sourdough Starter?

The answer is a big, resounding YES! I have done this many many times and the truth is, sourdough starter makes delicious naan also!

Check out the recipe for Foolproof Sourdough Naan.

How to eat Garlic Butter Naan

Naan is often used like a spoon to scoop up and eat curries, stew and other dishes. Tear off small pieces of bread and hold them between your fingers in one hand and use it to pick up your food, then pop the whole bit in your mouth.

Garlic butter naan would be perfect with any of these dishes, too!

  • Instant Pot Basil Chicken Coconut Curry
  • Instant Pot Lentil and Quinoa Chili
  • Instant Pot Barbecue Lentils
  • Smoked Beef Stew
  • Instant Pot Green Chile & Potato Stew

Ingredients

  • 1/4 C warm water
  • 2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1.5 tsp active dry or instant rapid rise yeast
  • 3/4 C warm milk
  • 3/4 C plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 C vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 4 C all purpose flour + more for dusting
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Garlic butter:

  • 3 Tbsp butter melted
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp fresh chopped cilantro or parsley

For cooking:

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil for cooking

Instructions

  • Begin by combining water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Allow the mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes until it starts bubbling on top.
  • Next, add milk, yogurt, oil, minced garlic, flour, baking powder, and salt to the bowl. Mix everything together until the dough comes together using your hands.
  • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it with floured hands until it becomes smooth, typically taking 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Lightly grease the same mixing bowl with a small spray of cooking oil to prepare for the naan.
  • Place the dough back into the greased bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Allow it to rest at room temperature for approximately an hour, until it doubles in size.
  • Once the dough has risen, divide it into 10 equal pieces and shape them into balls.
  • Using a rolling pin, roll out each ball of dough into a large oval shape, about 6 inches long and 1/8 inch thick.
  • Heat a pan over high heat. Lightly grease the surface with oil to prevent the dough from sticking.
