It’s been a little while since we have talked about using essential oils at home – sure, we post quite a lot of DIY’s (and we love them so much) but we also use essential oils every day, not only on ourselves but also on the kids.
Essential oils are so easy to use – whether you choose to purify the air, add them to your shampoo or conditioner, or use as healthy head spray for the kids … we wanted to share some of our favorite roller blends that serve so helpful for us during the school year.
Do you have a blend that you love? If you do, feel free to share in the comments.
Back to school with essential oils
When it comes to using these blends on kids, don’t feel as if you have to use them in a roller blend – the truth is, they can be used many ways. You can put them in a bracelet, or add to a diffuser necklace, or even put in an inhaler so they can use in class.
If you are using roller bottles, our favorite bottles are these empty glass 10ml bottles with a metal roller fitment, but we have also used these frosted roller bottles with roller fitments as well – we have carried in our purse, on trips and in the car and they haven’t leaked yet (knock on wood!)
We always dilute our essential oils with a carrier more liberally for kids, and we try to apply them on the bottom of the feet or down the spine.
Essential oil resources:
- Set of 24 glass roller bottles with metal fitments (buying in bulk is so much cheaper!)
- Inexpensive diffuser bracelet idea for kids
- Set of 3 essential oil snap bracelet for kids (with free shipping)
- DIY diffuser necklace for kids
- Fractionated coconut oil for rollerball blends
- Essential oil inhaler sticks, 12 pk
- Essential oil waterproof labels
To make each roller blend, count the drops (2 drops per 10ml roller bottle is a great dilution ration for kids), and top off. If you are using on an older child, you can get away with more drops per 10ml bottle. It’s helpful to check the dilution ratios if you are using essential oils on your kids.
Essential Oil blends for kids:
Skin soother for cuts, scrapes and owies
- 1 drop Lavender
- 1 drop Chamomile
- carrier oil (almond, jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, etc)
If you have kids that spend time outside and pick up the usual cuts, scrapes or mosquito bites, this duo is great to roll on as needed.
Wake up
- 1 drop Peppermint
- 1 drop Orange
- carrier oil (almond, jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, etc)
Mornings can be a little rough sometimes – use this blend behind the earlobes or the bottom of the feet as they head out to school.
Healthy Ears
- 1 drop Basil
- 1 drop Lavender
- carrier oil (almond, jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, etc)
This blend is great to apply around the outside of the ears and down the side of the neck to ward off the occassional earache.
Immune Support
- 1 drop Thieves
- 1 drop Frankincense
- carrier oil (almond, jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, etc)
Roll this blend on the feet bottoms and down the spine before they head out to school – we have also taken the additional opportunity to roll on feet bottoms before bed by lining all 5 kids on the bed with their feet hanging off the edge. Yep, it’s quite a sight 😉
Breathe Easy
- 1 drop R.C.
- 1 drop Lavender
- carrier oil (almond, jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, etc)
Every year when the cold weather creeps up, so does the muffly cough and congestion. Roll this on the chest or neck for extra support.
Sleep Helper
- 1 drop Frankincense
- 1 drop Lavender
- carrier oil (almond, jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, etc)
My boys can get pretty wound up – and when they do, everyone struggles to get their rest. This is a great blend to roll on the feet bottoms as they jump in bed at night. I usually roll on 30 minutes before their bed, then take the time to read to them in bed until they are sleepy.
Homework Helper
- 1 drop Rosemary
- 1 drop Basil
- carrier oil (almond, jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, etc)
Whether your kids go to a traditional school or they are homeschooled, they all have periods of time when they need help learning how to focus. Roll this blend on the back of the ear lobes, neck or on the wrists frequently during the day.

Should I dilute?
It’s always a great idea to dilute essential oils when using topically, whether on adults or children. In fact, diluting doesn’t make them any less effective, it just allows them to be absorbed by the body over a greater period of time and is safer for children.
If you use essential oils on your kids (or are maybe thinking about it) one of the best books to pick up is Gentle Babies by Debra Raybern. It’s a must for anyone who is thinking of using oils during pregnancy or while raising children and is a great resource to have available.
We always use the general guide of 2 drops per 10ml for children over the age of 6; but please, do your own research to find something that you are comfortable with when using on your children.
