Coffee is incredibly beneficial as an addition to bath and body products – not only does it help with stretch marks and acne scars, it’s great for toning and refining dull skin and the occasional cellulite.
The caffeine in coffee dilates blood vessels .. which helps improve circulation and reduce water retention. The antioxidants in coffee help release toxins which can also improve the health of your skin.
If you haven’t ever read about the benefits, you should – there is no wonder why people use coffee in scrubs and soaps as part of their beauty routine. Thankfully it’s quite easy to whip up soap bars and coffee sugar scrub in a matter of minutes.
These bars can be made with just a few simple ingredients and a silicone mold – we used a fun owl silicone mold that we had in the cabinet to make a few little bars for gifts. We also had some homemade molds that are really cute too – and such a perfect size to gift. You can find the molds on Amazon.
These molds can be used to make other DIY’s too – we have a heart silicone mold that we use for sugar scrub bars, and also lotion bars – so they really do get their use.
Simple Exfoliating Coffee Soap
What you will need:
- 1 lb Organic Pour and Melt Soap Base (1 lb will make 4 bars, 2 lbs will make 8 bars)
- Coffee grounds
- Soap mold (see this 16 pk here, or this owl mold for mini soaps)
- Pyrex glass measuring cup
To make these gorgeous soap bars, melt 1 lb of soap by breaking the squares easily with a knife into smaller cubes. Place the cubes in a 4 C. glass Pyrex measuring cup and melt at 30 second intervals in the microwave. I usually melt for 30 seconds, remove and stir, then put back in and repeat until the squares are all completely melted.
Once the soap has melted, add the coffee grounds – start with 1/4 C. and adjust as necessary. Use as much of as little as you would like – they serve the purpose of exfoliant for the skin. We opted for unused grounds (since wet grounds can harbor bacteria) – oddly enough we have about 15 huge bags of coffee in our pantry from a local friend who closed her coffee shop…
We don’t drink coffee so we have been using them in our compost bin and for many DIY’s. LOVE!
The scent of the soap comes from the addition of your choice of essential oil – you can opt for your choice of oil (Lavender, or maybe Frankincense? You could even use Nutmeg too).
Pour into soap molds and allow those molds to sit for 30 minutes or more to harden – depending on the temperature in your home.
Pop out of the molds and enjoy your new soap!
These soap bars make an incredible gift for family and friends for Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s Day and even for teachers.
