We have made quite a few different recipes for body wash over the last year ~ what’s great about making your own products is that you can change them up every so often, experiment with different scents and see what works great for you.
While I love Patchouli in my body wash, my daughter is madly more in love with Idaho Blue Spruce and Christmas Spirit… my boys love Gentle Baby, and my smallest really just goes for anything that’s closeby when she takes her bath.
One of the best oils to always have on hand though is Lavender. It’s great for DIY beauty products, for relaxing, for seasonal relief and even for supporting a healthy rest.
One of our favorite ways to use Lavender Essential Oil is in this Silky Smooth Body Wash that’s easy to whip up ~ just a few ingredients, and you can have another bottle of homemade body wash. Forget buying the varieties in store – not only is your own going to cost you less, you can control what goes into it from start to finish.
That stuff in store is not too safe for your body, If at all possible, I would never buy it (even in a pinch) — it’s just too easy to make your own.
Homemade Silky Smooth Lavender Body Wash
This recipe makes 30 oz.
- 3 C. Distilled Water
- 1 C. Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Castile Soap
- 1/4 C. Aloe Vera (we use THIS)
- 1/4 C. Rosehip Oil, or Fractionated Coconut Oil (or, Olive Oil)
- 25-30 drops Lavender Essential Oil
- 1 tsp Guar Gum (we used NOW Foods 8 oz canister but you can pick up any noted HERE)
To make: In your blender, add everything with the exception of Castile Soap and Lavender Essential Oil. Blend on HIGH until well mixed. Add your Castile Soap (if you put it in with everything it will foam up VERY big!) and Essential Oil, give it a quick mix on LOW and then pour into your body wash containers.
Since this makes 30 oz, you can divide into thirds to make a smaller portion, or fill 3 containers for your bathroom – one for you, one for your spouse, one for your kids.
You can use any container of your choice, but we recommend any of these:

I have lavender & hemp castille soap. Can I use this and if so, would I lower the amount of lavender essential oil?
Oh my.. that sounds heavenly! I’d lower it a bit, best to start low and then adjust with more. Just go without, and add maybe 2-3 drops at a time until you find something that works for you.
What would the guar gum be for in this body wash recipe?
it serves as a thickener!
this sound like a large batch how long will it last with a preservative
It doesn’t last too long here.. no more than a month (six of us using a bottle of body wash). One month I’d say. If you want to use a preservative, you can use Optiphen — it’s pricey but it goes a long way.
Do you use aloe vera gel? The link doesn’t work so I couldn’t see what you use. Thanks!
Yes, I use the gel!
