Make the coolest leather earrings with this simple DIY, leather scraps, and a simple tear drop shape file. This is an easy DIY that takes mere minutes!
Have you ever been wild for leather earrings? I have to confess that although I do have my ears pierced, I never want to wear earrings.
I think it’s because I can’t be bothered to put them on.
Despite my un-fascination with earrings, I have a friend that is infatuated with leather. She recently asked me if I would throw together a tutorial so she could make her own leather earrings.
You can typically find these earrings on Etsy or upscale boutiques ~ here in Arizona they are common at the Goldfield Ghost Town souvenir shop as well. As easy as they are to buy, they can be relatively expensive. You can easily make them for a fraction of the price and even use your skills to make several pairs for family & friends.
All you need to make these leather earrings is leather, earring hooks, a needle or safety p in, pair of scissors and a pair of pliers. You can find leather scraps at Hobby Lobby or flea markets. You might even want to consider upcycling an old purse.
You don’t need much at all actually. If you opt for the craft store, you can find a bag oof scrap leather for $4 (before coupon) that will make 50-100 pairs of earrings (if not more). You can’t beat that.
How to Make Lightweight Leather Earrings
I searched Pixabay for a clipart shape of a teardrop, then dropped that image in a letter-size document at an appropriate size. (You can download that PDF here).
Once I cut that teardrop out, I used it to trace onto the leather before cutting with small scissors.
Once you have a bunch of pairs cut & trimmed, it’s time to make a hole.
Use a safety pin or needle to poke a hole near the top of the earring. Don’t go too high because you will risk the needle ripping through.
Push that in through a few times to make sure that hole is ready for the earring hook.
Using your pliers, open up the bottom of your fish hook to loop that hook through. Try to squeeze that ring through the hole and then close the earring hook shut.
A word to the wise: be patient, it will take some practice.
That’s it! They are all ready for you to wear.
If you picked up fabric scraps at the craft store, you can make a few pairs of each variety (white, gray, black, brown). Hobby Lobby also has rolls of leather fabric if you are looking for more variety.
These earrings are perfect for diffusing essential oils as well – simply add a drop of your favorite essential oil on the back of each earring. The scent will carry for the day (if not longer!)
