Homemade Mint Extract

Picking up store bought mint extract is quite a bit more in cost than making it yourself. This simple recipe for Homemade Mint Extract requires just two ingredients and a little bit of hands-off waiting time:

Cost breakdown:

  • Organic mint leaves – grown in my own backyard
  • Vodka – 750ml was $7.99 (or $.31 per oz)

So for just a fraction of the price of store purchased mint extract you can make your own much more affordably.

Looking for more mint recipes? Try this mint sugar made with fresh mint, too!

Ingredients

  • 1 C fresh mint
  • 1.25 C vodka

Instructions

  • Wash mint and pat dry so there is no water on it.
  • Slightly break/crush/chop mint leaves and add them to a jar. Pour vodka over the mint and place lid on jar. It is important that the leaves stay submerged.
  • Place in a dark area and shake it every few days over the next four weeks.
  • After four weeks strain the leaves off and pour the liquid into small bottles.

Notes

  • You can add the leaves to small bottles like pictured however they are harder to get the leaves out when it comes time to strain it.
  • If you want your extract even stronger, you can change out the mint each week and keep using the same vodka.
