The Difference Between Conventional and Alternative Medicine

Difference Between Conventional and Alternative Medicine

Over the last several months, there has been many times that I have asked myself why there is such a dislike amongst the masses when someone suggests or mentions alternative medicine.

Why, when you talk about health problems and issues, is there such a blatant disregard for nutrition as a probable cause?

Why is there such a focus on prescriptions as the source of healing when there are many other options out there?

Why is the first solution always dependent on a prescription, instead of a change in lifestyle?

Why do people downplay the role of their own lifestyle choices in their own personal health challenges?

These are questions I ask myself every day.

Doing a great deal of self study in the area of food, the body, nutrition and our health care industry may prompt you to ask the same questions – if not more, than what we have mentioned above.

Today, we have more choices at our fingertips than we have ever had before – including different approaches to our health and our personal healing.

Though it seems like conventional medicine is dominating most of our society today, there are a number of natural, and alternative physicians and options popping up. More & more people are turning to alternative healing methods – and it’s important to know what those choices are. Although those methods are often times downplayed by doctors, large companies and the health industry, they CAN be a viable solution to challenges you are experiencing.

In today’s society, many people may put their trust and care in the hands of someone else – their physician, their parents, even their spouse perhaps… but many people are starting to realize that the BEST way to proper health is through personal accountability.

Nobody can look out for your health better than yourself.

Conventional medicine has transformed over the last 50 years ~ and while it has helped heal and save some people, through the years it has also had some profound effects on the American public.

It has taken away personal accountability. Today people think they can eat and drink whatever they want. In the end, they can just take a pill, prescription or, get surgery to fix what is wrong.

It has turned people against natural or traditional healing methods.  Herbs and Essential Oils have been around for hundreds of years – home remedies, and good nutrition. But medicine has told people that these forms of healing are ineffective, unreliable, and not “scientifically proven”.

It has made people think that their issues are normal.  This is probably the biggest problem I see today ~ instead of focusing on their assets, people tend to complain about their ailments by sharing their pain stories, telling people how many pills they took, or even going so far as to snap pictures to post on Facebook of their “pain pills’ that they are on to make it look like their lives are so poor. Instead, they could be focusing their energy on changing their diet, and looking for alternative practices to help them improve their condition/pain.

Conventional Medicine

If conventional medicine was indeed better, then we wouldn’t have such staggering numbers of personal health issues today.  In any case, our culture has allowed our current health industry to become so powerful that they are in the business of keeping people in illness – rather than helping to treat them to help them get better.

Doctors don’t receive awards for health – in most cases it’s for treating an illness. By keeping you sick, and on prescriptions, they make you a regular customer. I haven’t met a doctor {yet} that has even so much suggested a change in diet or lifestyle as a way to combat a health care problem… which says quite a bit.

Furthermore, med schools don’t teach nutrition, proper diet, or even disease prevention.   One’s pain is usually treated with prescriptions that only mask the symptoms – with pain never ceasing, but coming back at a later time, sometimes even worse than the pain prior.

Alternative Medicine

Alternative Health differs from Conventional health in that it emphasizes prevention over treatment.  Natural health not only teaches the patient accountability … it lets them understand that the food they eat, the lifestyle they take part in, and the choices you make reflect greatly on your personal wellness goals.

Personal responsibility is probably the biggest factor in your health. When you start to recognize and acknowledge how your actions lead to your well being, then (and ONLY then!) will you be more likely to start and keep on the path to better health.

Taking Personal Accountability

Illness (and even pain) is a sign that your body is already sick – it’s a sign that you have been doing something wrong. Perhaps you are eating the wrong foods; you might be smoking too much; you might even have too much emotional stress in your life – and focusing on those areas might just help you prevail out of the pain that you are in.

Our body is amazingly resilient – especially so without any intervention or prescription.  When you can focus on the right food, rid yourself of the emotional stress in your life, and make better lifestyle choices, you might be surprised to find less problems with your health over time.

Not every problem requires a costly doctor’s visit. Not every cough or cold requires a prescription – for most, getting adequate sleep, daily exercise, and eating a well balanced diet that is absent of processed foods, rich in organic produce, and low in sugar, will do wonders for your health.

NO prescription will ever be more valuable than your own self knowledge.
