Simple Ginger Orange Lip Balm

Essential Oils

Welcome fall with this simple Ginger Orange Lip Balm - whipped together in less than 5 minutes with 4 simple ingredients!

Every year when September rolls around, the scents of fall pop up – in lip balm, your essential oil diffuser, candles, room sprays, and even bath and body products.

Because face it: who doesn’t love pumpkin spice everything?!

Move over pumpkin spice because ginger and orange are quite an incredible combination too – added to lip balm it’s a great way to get your ‘fix’ without spending tons of money.   Making your own lip balm is super easy too – three ingredients, and a few empty lip balm tubes or tubs, it’s something you can literally do as you are multitasking with kids and making breakfast in the kitchen.

Ask me how I know 😉

For years I saw many of my friends DIY’ing lip balm, and as appealing as it looked, I wasn’t sure that the up front cost of the materials were actually anything but money-saving. Putting a $1 Chapstick or Carmex in the shopping cart seemed like a better alternative… until I took the leap and tried my first DIY.

It was the best feeling ever.

Since then, we have done a wide variety of DIYs – lip balms, dish soap, dish tabs, body wash and even lip scrub.

Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but it really is sorta fun to be able to whip your own lip balm together – not just for yourself but also for family and friends. And ginger orange lip balm? Yes please!

To get started with this DIY you will need a few basic things:

  • Lip Balm Tubes or Containers (I love these here)
  • Beeswax Pellets (so much easier than grating bars of beeswax – trust me on this!)
  • Coconut Oil
  • Organic ground ginger
  • Orange essential oil

I love to spread newspaper down on the counter to avoid getting beeswax stuck to the counter top, so feel free to do the same.

Ginger Orange Lip Balm

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 C. coconut oil
  • 1 T bsp + 1 tsp beeswax pellets
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger (or more, based on preference)
  • 5-6 drops orange essential oil

To make:

  1. In a glass Pyrex measuring cup and adding 1/4 C. melted coconut oil along with 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp of beeswax pellets, and pop in the microwave for 20 second bursts until melted.
  2. Once the mixture is melted, pull it out carefully (it’s hot!) and set it on the counter. Add your ground ginger (1/2 tsp or more, as needed), and 5-6 drops of orange essential oil.
  3. Stir thoroughly to combine, then carefully pour into your empty lip balm tubes or tubs and wait 15-20 minutes for them to cool.

After you are done making your lip balm, you’ll want to clean out the Pyrex cup you melted the ingredients in – and that can be tricky!

The best way to clean that out quickly and easily is to heat it up for 10-12 seconds in the microwave. Then wipe out the cup with a few paper towels, toss those in the trash, then wash in the sink with soapy water.

Voila!   You did it! Let the crowd you wild as you celebrate fall with your own DIY ginger orange lip balm!

Have you ever made your own lip balm? If so, what is your favorite combination?

In your recipe, is this the real ground ginger found in the spice isle of food stores or is this in an oil base? It sounds really great. I’m eager to try your recipe.
