Chances are, if you have kids or pets, you keep some type of spray in your house – from Febreze Fabric Refresher to Lysol Disinfectant Spray. Lysol is very big in many schools too, with many teachers carrying it in the classroom to ward off germs.
Usually when the new school year comes around, Lysol Wipes or Disinfecting Wipes/Spray are on every Back to School List. I don’t think there has ever been a year that I haven’t seen it on the list that my kids bring home. We are all so conditioned just to go “purchase” that we don’t really ever think too much about what is in these cleaners.
It’s just the norm to buy them. And to not buy them and make your own is just – well, not normal. Right?
If you head to the Lysol site… this is what they say:
And Lysol air disinfectant spray kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria. Disinfectants can be used on commonly … What surface do you avoid touching at all costs?

Yikes — both have toxic ingredients that would probably be better left on the shelf, right?
Not only are the ingredients bad for your nervous and respiratory system, they can cause sensitivity to skin, and cause allergies, too.
Make your own for less, and using things you already have at home. You’ll save a trip to the grocery store and keep money in your pocket.
Homemade Fabric Refresher
- Spray Bottle (we like these glass on Amazon) but you can repurpose a Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar Bottle, too!
- 1 C. Vinegar (this helps to deodorize)
- 1 C. Distilled Water
- 1/2 tsp Vegetable Glycerin (helps to blend the essential oils so they actually blend in and not sit on top)
- 20 drops of your favorite Essential Oil
You can use Grapefruit, Rosemary, Lavender, the list could go on.
Add all the ingredients to the bottle and give it a swift shake to combine – spray as your fabric refresher, but also as a room spray, too.
Why not baking soda? Baking soda works GREAT for odors – we agree. But you don’t want to mix baking soda with vinegar or it will cause a huge chemical reaction. It’s great for plowing gunk out of drains, but you don’t want to put it in your spray bottle because it will eventually cause your bottle to clog up.

I’m going to have to try this spray out. I love the smell of rosemary, so I’ll probably use that essential oil! One of my kids has a sensitive stomach, and I’m always calling up my local upholstery cleaner to clean and disinfect my couches. This spray would be awesome to have on hand for my couches after any vomit accidents.
