Non-Toxic Fabric Refresher (Easy, Simple Ingredients)

Essential Oils

Non-Toxic Fabric Refresher (easy, simple ingredients!)

Chances are, if you have kids or pets, you keep some type of spray in your house – from Febreze Fabric Refresher to Lysol Disinfectant Spray. Lysol is very big in many schools too, with many teachers carrying it in the classroom to ward off germs.

Usually when the new school year comes around, Lysol Wipes or Disinfecting Wipes/Spray are on every Back to School List. I don’t think there has ever been a year that I haven’t seen it on the list that my kids bring home. We are all so conditioned just to go “purchase” that we don’t really ever think too much about what is in these cleaners.

It’s just the norm to buy them. And to not buy them and make your own is just – well, not normal. Right?

If you head to the Lysol site… this is what they say:

Shop for disinfectants at Lysol. Lysol air disinfectant spray kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria. … To Control and Prevent Mold & Mildew: Apply to pre-cleaned …

And  Lysol air disinfectant spray kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria. Disinfectants can be used on commonly … What surface do you avoid touching at all costs?

I don’t think I have ever bought Lysol for our house and yet my kids really just don’t get sick at all. So is it really all that it’s cracked up to be?

If you head down the cleaning aisle in the grocery store you will see a huge display of disinfectants – for counters, bathrooms, floors, laundry and even for your car….   and they are a great example of something good gone bad.

Building up antibiotic resistance is important – but if you are raising your kids in an environment that is drenched in constant disinfectant soaps, and cleaners, given prescriptions of antibiotics that kills their good gut bacteria and is kept away from (normal) germs that you encounter daily, they will be more susceptible to illnesses.

Not to mention these items are toxic in their own way – if you head to the Environmental Working Group you can see the ratings for Febreze and Lysol as a D and F.  Not so reassuring!  And scary quite honestly – because many people TRUST these brands for their family and are so conditioned to throw them in their cart.

Febreze Fabric Refresher scored largely Ds and Fs from most if not all of their scented Fabric Refreshers, according to the Environmental Working Group.

Lysol Disinfectant Spray scored Ds and Fs on the Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning website – what’s random is that you would never know that with the sheer volume of commercials, print ads and claims on their website for all the “good work” it does.

Yikes — both have toxic ingredients that would probably be better left on the shelf, right?

Not only are the ingredients bad for your nervous and respiratory system, they can cause sensitivity to skin, and cause allergies, too.

Make your own for less, and using things you already have at home. You’ll save a trip to the grocery store and keep money in your pocket.

Homemade Fabric Refresher

  •  Spray Bottle (we like these glass on Amazon) but you can repurpose a Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar Bottle, too!
  • 1 C. Vinegar (this helps to deodorize)
  • 1 C. Distilled Water
  • 1/2 tsp Vegetable Glycerin (helps to blend the essential oils so they actually blend in and not sit on top)
  • 20 drops of your favorite Essential Oil

You can use Grapefruit, Rosemary, Lavender, the list could go on.

Essential Oils for the Home

Add all the ingredients to the bottle and give it a swift shake to combine – spray as your fabric refresher, but also as a room spray, too.

Why not baking soda? Baking soda works GREAT for odors – we agree. But you don’t want to mix baking soda with vinegar or it will cause a huge chemical reaction. It’s great for plowing gunk out of drains, but you don’t want to put it in your spray bottle because it will eventually cause your bottle to clog up.

I’m going to have to try this spray out. I love the smell of rosemary, so I’ll probably use that essential oil! One of my kids has a sensitive stomach, and I’m always calling up my local upholstery cleaner to clean and disinfect my couches. This spray would be awesome to have on hand for my couches after any vomit accidents.
