Homemade {DIY} Hair Detangler with Essential Oils

Do you have kids (girls) with long hair?  We have some REALLy long hair in our house – long as in down to our lower back… and as great as we take care of our hair, having a hair detangler that is easy to use is an amazing thing.

With long hair comes lots of knots and tangles, and sensitive heads. It’s NOT fun to watch your kids cry and scream when you are trying to comb their hair. But it’s also not good to “not” comb their hair – because face it, knots don’t work out themselves, right?

Why Not Use Commercial Hair Detangler?

The commercial items in store are FULL of ingredients that you might not necessarily want on your hair —

  • Cetearyl Alcohol
  • Laureth-4
  • Parfum
  • Propylparaben
  • Fragrance

And more… in fact, check out this one NAME brand popular hair detangler on the EWG – on a scale of 1 to 10, the detangler is rated as high as 8 in some places ( pretty scary – right? )

Other HIGH concerns: Endocrine disruption, Multiple, additive exposure sources, Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Miscellaneous, Persistence and bioaccumulation; Other MODERATE concerns: Biochemical or cellular level changes, Contamination concerns, Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive); Other LOW concerns: Enhanced skin absorption,Cancer, Data gaps, Ecotoxicology, Neurotoxicity, Occupational hazards

Hair Detanglers work in weird ways – most have polymers that coat the hair shaft to make them appear shiny. But in the end, it’s only appearance – not purpose.   Read this excerpt from The Truth About Silicone in Hair Products:

The shine we want is when the cuticle layer is sealed and light reflects off the hair. This only happens when hair is properly hydrated and kept as healthy as possible.

Silicone will weigh the hair down making it limp, lifeless, and with time, very dull. It prevents moisture from penetrating the hair shaft and becomes like a magnet for dirt and other ingredients. So in essence, we get a good shine for a couple of days, but over time it will attract more buildup on the hair. (Source)

Homemade {DIY} Hair Detangler with Essential Oils

Here’s an option that works well for my hair and my daughters long hair (I have two girls and one has longer hair than the other).

Homemade Hair Detangler

  • 2/3 C. Distilled Water
  • 1/3 – 2/3 C. Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar (removes build up, improves shine)
  • 2 tsp Olive Oil (or you can use Jojoba Oil)
  • 1 dropper of Vitamin E Oil (you can find HERE or, at your local Sprouts – one bottle lasts a LONG time)
  • 10 drops each Peppermint, Lavender, Rosemary and Orange Essential Oils
You can use any combination – but we love the combination of these 4. You can also use Tea Tree, or even Patchouli too, if you wish.  Since hard water is alkaline, it will counteract the acidity of Apple Cider Vinegar – you will need to play around with the ratio depending on your water – some may have soft water (in which case you can use less ACV) or, if you have hard water, then use a little more.

To use: Spray in hair after shampoo and conditioner and let sit for 1-2 minutes, then comb with a wide-tooth comb to assist with tangles.  You can store in fridge, or keep in bathroom provided you will use it within 3-4 weeks.

You might also want to pick up a 2 pk of Glass Spray Bottles on Amazon (these are the variety we chose) – they are heavy duty and GREAT for mixing up items with Essential Oils.
