One of the BEST & EASIEST ways to enjoy Essential Oils is through diffusing – and when you say “Diffuse”, most people assume that just means making the air smell great.
And while that is true…. there are many OTHER reasons one can diffuse, too. We use Essential Oils daily around our home, in the car, and even at work in our office, and while we use them a variety of ways (topically, internally) we use them the MOST by way of many, many diffusers.
#1 ~ Boosting the Immune System ~ During the cold & flu season will help combat the creepies that like to lurk in the house and wreck havoc on the family.
#2 ~ Cleansing the Air ~ Essential oils help to increase the atmospheric oxygen and decrease the toxicity of chemicals. Diffusing helps remove toxins from the air – depending on where you are, that might be a small few, or many in number — increases ozone and negative ions (Source).
- Increases atmospheric oxygen
- Destroys odors from mold, cigarettes and more
- Removes metallic particles and toxins from the air
Negative ions stimulate your nervous system – which in turn controls your sleep, digestion and relaxation. If you are in an area with a lot of electronic devices (positive ions), then you can diffuse a negatively ionizing oil to balance your air (some good ones are Bergamot, Cedarwood, Grapefruit and even lavender).
Likewise, if you live in an area near the ocean OR, in the country, you are surrounded by positive ions – so you’ll need negative ions to balance out your air – some good ones are Rosemary, Ylang Ylang, Pine, and even Cypress.
#3 ~ Help you Relax ~ Essential oils cross the blood-brain barrier and can elevate your mood. Once they hit your brain’s emotional center, they can improve your mood, and increase your energy. They are a great way to help you relax.
#4 ~ Set the Mood ~ Essential oils can be used as mood enhancers – so it’s obviously a great idea to enjoy a night with your loved one by diffusing some essential oils.
#5 – Benefit many people at once ~When you put on a diffuser, no matter what room of the house, it can benefit everyone that is there at the time. They are in the air, so everyone who is present can breathe in, and breathe out.
To properly diffuse, you will need a really good quality diffuser – you can consider it an investment in your home and health.

I’m confident using oils from Young Living ~ you can read more about that by heading HERE. We would LOVE to know what combinations you like for this time of the year… so comment, so we can try them too!
What diffuser do you recommend? Are the humidifier/diffuser combos any good? I use a humidifier in my son’s room but would like to diffuse at the same time instead of getting two different appliances.
Hi Kristi – I have 9 diffusers…. the one I love the most is from a Facebook page called “Royally Oily” — they often have theirs for sale for $49.99 (+ $5 shipping) and those run all night (8 hours). It has a one year warranty too.
I have about 5 of those, and then I have 4 Young Living Diffusers (you get one with the starter kit and I have picked up a few extra since). The one I use for my kids is the Royally Oily one .. since it runs all night, and it has a light (changes color) my kids aren’t as scared if they get up in the night. We co-sleep, but they still often times get up and come in the kitchen to drink water, so I feel better with them knowing that the light is on just in case they get scared.
Thank you for the recommendations. So do you suggest getting a separate humidifier? I don’t think a diffuser puts out enough mist to also act as a humidifier.
I would… you can usually find them for a pretty good price on Amazon or Target. Cool mist is supposed to be better than warm. I know they say some diffusers “can” be humidifiers, but I wouldn’t count on it working quite as well to do “both” (if that makes sense!)
Great, thanks. Usually I see humidifiers advertised that they can also function as diffusers but I’m not sure how good those are either.
