We have talked so much about using Essential Oils for health and wellness – from making your own body wash to baby shampoo and body wash, carpet powder and also in your laundry.
Not only can Essential Oils be great for calming and supporting a healthy immune system, they can also be used for cleaning, too.
Using Essential Oils around your home is the best way to freshen and clean your living area. Ditch the toxic cleaners in store and opt to make your own homemade cleaners with ingredients that are inexpensive and better for you.
Here are a few ways you can use Essential Oils to freshen & clean:
#1 – Freshen your Carpet
Combine baking soda and Essential Oil (we love Purification) to make your own carpet powder. Mix 1/2 – 1 C. Baking Soda with 10-12 drops of Purification Essential Oil and store in a glass {restaurant style} sugar shaker.
Before you vacuum, sprinkle on your carpet to eliminate odors – let it sit 7-10 minutes, then vacuum.
#2 – Keep Fruit Fresh
To keep your fruit fresh, wash your fruit in cool water along with 2-6 drops of Lemon Essential Oil. Stir the fruit in the bowl and allow that liquid to filter into the fruit – it will help increase the life of your fruit and keep it fresh a few extra days.
#3 – Freshen your House
Here in Arizona we change our air filters religiously – every time you change them, use Essential Oils in your filters. Try for Purification Essential Oil.
(Or try cinnamon bark, rosemary or orange essential oil on the filters before you replace.)
The scent will waft through the house … which is perfect if you have company coming over.
#4 – Scented Vacuum
Chances are, your vacuum may have a foam filter within (perhaps under the bag) that you change and rinse regularly. Next time you change that filter, add 8-10 drops of Lavender, Purification, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Citronella or even Cinnamon Bark to your foam filter (just drop it on), put the filter back in and vacuum.
Your entire room will carry that scent and make the house smell amazing. The scent should last a few days.
#5 – Freshen Laundered Clothes
Ditch the dryer sheets and softener and go all natural with your freshly laundered clothes. Use vinegar in the rinse cycle and dryer balls in the dryer – enhance the dryer balls with scent using Lavender or Bergamot Essential Oils (4-5 drops every few loads).
Your clothes will dry a little faster – you will save on energy costs and you won’t have to worry about toxic ingredients touching your skin..
#6 – Save Burned Pans
Have a habit of burning your pans when you cook in the kitchen? It’s ok beceause I do that often too! 🙂 Save those burned pans with Lemon Essential Oil.. it works wonderfully. Scrape out what you can from the pan, then drop 4-5 drops of Lemon Essential Oil in the pan and give it some elbow grease.
For harder to get off stains, then add 4-5 drops of Lemon Essential Oil with 1/2 c. water and let the pan boil on the stove for 5 minutes to loosen up the gunk.
#7 – Toilet Roll Freshener
Freshen your bathroom with a single drop of Purification Essential Oil placed in the inside of your toilet paper tube. Every time someone reaches for the toilet paper, you’ll get the scent of Purification.
#8 – Freshen your Kitchen Counters
To give your kitchen a fresh, clean scent, wipe the counters down with Lemon or Rosemary Essential Oil. Fill up your sink with a few inches of clean water, and add 3-4 drops of Lemon or Rosemary Essential Oil. Soak a rag, wring it out, and then wipe down your counters and cabinets for a fresh scent.
#9 – Car Freshener
Keep your car smelling fresh with Essential Oils – make these easy DIY Diffusers HERE that you can clip to your vents. Add 1 drop of Peppermint or Stress Away to the rough side of the leather to keep the car smelling great.
OR, to relieve tension, use Lavender Essential Oil.
#10 – Keep your Shower Clean
Your shower curtain is a haven for bad bacteria and scum – keep it clean with Tea Tree and Eucalyptus Essential Oils. Use a dark brown, glass spray bottle filled with water, and add 8-10 drops of each Thieves Essential Oil and spray your shower curtain and inside the shower once you are done each day to keep it clean.
(Note: Or, use Eucalyptus and Tea Tree Oils.)
#11 – Leather Cleaner
Have leather sofas? Use Lemon Essential Oil to keep them in tip-top shape. See our last post about it here.
#12 – Keep your Sink Clean
Lemon or Lemongrass are two of our favorites for a clean sink. Simply mix 1/2 C. of baking soda with 4-5 drops of Lemon OR Lemongrass Essential Oil to scrub the sink each night and keep it smelling fresh.
#13 – Freshen the Air in your Rooms
Ditch the toxic household fragrance spray you find in store (ie. Febreze, Glade, etc.) and make your own – it’s better for you, easier and cheaper! Combine 8-10 drops of Rosemary, Orange, Purification or your favorite Oily scent (perhaps Lavender?) in a small glass spray bottle (like these HERE) and top off with distilled water.
Keep this spray in your bathroom, laundry room, bedrooms and kitchen as necessary to freshen the air when needed.
#14 – A Powerful Solvent
Have kids who love to crayon and marker walls? Or perhaps stick stickers or bandages all over your home? I do too… use Lemon Essential Oil, it’s a lifesaver! Lemon Essential Oil removes glue, tar, sap and even art from your walls with just a few drops. Use with a magic eraser OR soft sponge.
#15 – Stinky Dinner?
Cooking a dinner that’s on the stinky side? If you are… then before you get started, fill a small saucepan with water and add 5-6 drops of Essential Oil (Cinnamon is great, as is Lemon or Purification). The Essential Oil will prevent your kitchen from smelling horribly and you won’t have to worry about toxic air sprays taking over!
#16 – Get rid of Critters!
Critters in your kitchen are best warded off with Peppermint Essential Oil – just mix 15-20 drops in a glass spray bottle (like this HERE) and spray in problem areas.
#17 – Clean your Washer
Your washer needs to be cleaned often to keep it in tip-top shape. To best clean, we suggest adding 5 drops of Tea Tree Oil (or, Lemon if you wish) with 1/2 C. Vinegar and running a HOT cycle a few times each month. For even more cleaning power, use Thieves Essential Oil to clean around the seal (if you have a front loader!)
#18 – Fabric Refresher
Combine your favorite Essential Oil (perhaps Lavender?) with distilled water and make a relatively easy Fabric Refresher for your home. Spray your sofas to keep them smelling fresh – or, even your clothes in your closet, too!
#19 – Fresh & Clean Floors
Use Pine Essential Oil to make your own DIY Pine Floor Cleaner. Ditch that Pine Sol! Making your own is SO easy and it’ll make your house smell amazing!
#20 – Homemade Dishwasher Detergent
Do you rely on your dishwasher daily? We do too – here’s a great way to make your own {effective} Homemade Dishwasher Detergent with a few {easy} ingredients. It’s incredibly effective and smells GREAT, too!
Essential Oils are some of the BEST {Natural} Tools for managing your health – supporting your respiratory and immune system, keeping your home clean and supporting a healthy lifestyle.
It’s important that you consider quality essential oils – as many oils you find in stores are adulterated, and are merely fragrance oils.
We are passionate about using Young Living Oils – you can read more about that HERE. I personally lean towards a company that grows their own plants & trees on farms that are theirs (NOT outsourced)… has both in-house AND third party testing, and doesn’t use any synthetic chemicals or pesticides on their plants.
All the oils mentioned above in bold (with exception of Pine!) are in the Young Living Starter Kit – too!
I also love a company who has opened up their farms ANY time – that’s transparency at it’s best.
