Super Soft Hamburger Buns

Breads & Desserts

Pic1

If there is one thing that I go crazy for, it’s baked bread. Fresh baked bread.

And there comes a great sense of satisfaction when you can whip your own bread up in the kitchen and avoid a trip to the store.

These hamburger buns are SO easy to make.. and they are deliciously soft. They look like pretzel rolls at first.. and quite honestly are MUCH easier than pretzel rolls and tastier too. (So my advice is.. if you feel like doing pretzel rolls make these instead. You will thank yourself!)

Why does someone make their own rolls when you can run and get a cheap pack at the store?

Let me just say that these hamburger buns were the product of not wanting to go to the store. Hauling 5 kids in this Arizona heat isn’t fun… and when you have supper to make, whipping up your own seems more logical.

Ingredients
  1. 2 Tbsp Active Dry Yeast
  2. 1 C. + 2 Tbsp Warm Water (105 - 115 degrees F)
  3. 1/4 C. Granulated Sugar
  4. 1 Egg, slightly beaten
  5. 1/3 C. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  6. 1 tsp Salt
  7. 3 1/2 C. Organic, All Purpose Flour
  8. 1 Egg Yolk + 2 Tbsp Milk (for the egg wash)
  9. Optional: Sesame Seeds OR Kosher Salt
Instructions
  1. Heat your oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. In your KitchenAid, mix the yeast and warm water until dissolved - allow to sit for 5 minutes to proof (it should get frothy).
  3. Add the sugar, oil, egg, and salt - stir just until combined.
  4. Add the flour, and mix on low - once it is blended, continue to mix with your dough hook until it pulls away from the sides (2-3 minutes).
  5. Turn out on a lightly floured surface and knead (by hand) for 2-3 minutes - you might need to add more flour.
  6. The dough should be soft and elastic - divide into 12 equal portions and shape each into a smooth ball. I like to pull the seams down to the bottom to make the tops very smooth.
  7. Place the rolls seam side down onto a greased baking sheet - unless you are using a liner. Ensure they are 3-4" apart from each other.
  8. Cover with a tea towel or, lightly greased plastic wrap.
  9. Let sit for 10-15 minutes or until larger in size.
  10. Uncover and brush with the egg wash mixture (above). Sprinkle with sesame seeds or kosher salt (on the tops).
  11. Pop in the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes - bake for 10 minutes to see them turn nice and golden. OR, opt for 15 minutes for a dark, rich color (still a very soft roll!)
  12. The number of rolls this recipe makes will vary depending on the size in which you make each hamburger bun.
Notes
  1. Best when eaten fresh, but can also be refrigerated in a larger ziploc bag and reheated in the microwave for 8-12 seconds a piece before serving.
