Celebrate a new baby with this easy, 10 minute baby receiving blanket! This simple tutorial will teach you how to sew a baby blanket in just minutes!
One of my favorite things to gift or sew for new parents is a baby blanket. Over the years, I’ve been the wonderful recipient of many handmade baby blankets – from crocheted blankets to minky blankets, receiving blankets and burp cloths.
They’ve definitely gotten their use in our home and they’ll all get passed down to my kids when they (hopefully!) decide to have children of their own.
There is something beautiful about soft, cuddly baby blankets. Wrapped around a newborn they make a newborn impossible to put down. In all honesty, I told my kids that cuddly baby receiving blankets make me want more children. But alas.. we’re done and that’s not in the plans!
This easy, 10-minute baby receiving blanket pattern is simple to put together for friends, family or as a handmade gift. It would pair well with some easy burp cloths, soft baby blocks and perhaps even some no-sew fabric tags.
Finding the Best Fabric
All you need to make a simple baby receiving blanket is 1-1.25 yards of two different cuddle flannel prints, and matching thread. Sew up easily with your favorite sewing machine. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can pick up a Singer Simple at Walmart for around $75.
Every so often JoAnn Fabrics will have a great price on cuddle fabrics – anywhere from $1.99 – $2.49 per yard. But if you miss a sale, Walmart has a good selection too. The daily price on snuggle/cuddle fabrics at Walmart is $3.99-$4.44 per yard, which is much cheaper than the regular, non-sale price at JoAnn.
Check out the scrap bin too — as sometimes you can find snuggle prints at the end of the bolt that are discounted, too.
Simple 10-Minute Baby Receiving Blanket
Supplies needed:
- 1 – 1.25 yards each of 2 different cuddle/snuggle fabric prints
- thread to match (white works best in most cases)
- sewing machine
Start by laying both fabric pieces on a flat surface, lined up together (as best as you can). The fabric should be together with the right sides facing each other (wrong sides out).
If you choose to pin, do so at this time. Pin every 2-3 inches around the entire blanket, taking care to leave a 6″ gap on one of the sides.
Use a straight stitch to stitch around the perimeter of the blanket with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Leave a 6″ gap on one of the sides, making sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of the gap. Trim off excess fabric and loose thread to make sure you don’t have unnecessary bulk.
Trim any loose thread, then put your hand in the hole and pull the inside out (so now it’s right side out).
Iron the blanket and press the corners. Then use a simple straight stitch to sew that 6″ opening shut. Easy peasy!
That’s it! Once you have the fabric, this easy baby receiving blanket takes just minutes to sew together. It’s a great activity for a young girl who wants to learn how to sew or perhaps wants to expand her sewing skills.
Our 12 year old daughter found the fabric for this baby blanket at Walmart and paired with some cuddle fabric we had at home to make this. She managed to cut the fabric, pin them together, and sew in less than 15 minutes as I was making dinner.
Save your leftover fabric — 18″ squares are perfect to pair together for a small doll blanket for toddlers, too.
