Having white teeth is pretty important to most people today – in fact, when it comes to taking photos, many people shy away from wanting to smile because their teeth may not be as white as they would like them to be.
Looking at the number of people who resort to using white strips on their teeth at home or going to a professional for whitening treatments, it’s obvious that having a bright, white smile is important to ensure self confidence and first impressions.
Unfortunately, no matter how much we brush, whitening the teeth can be a tremendous challenge – in a time when coffee and tea are the morning norm, most people struggle.
Why do your Teeth Turn Yellow?
Teeth discolor when you develop stains on the enamel of the tooth (surface) or or when there is a problem with the structure of your teeth much deeper than the surface. The enamel of you rteeth is the hard white surface, but underneath that is the dentin which can become affected when the enamel wears thin.
Teeth can become discolored from a variety of things:
- Drinking coffee (which is acidic) – see this wonderful alternative
- Eating processed food (which is largely acidic) – including soda, candy, packaged food, etc.
- Using antibiotics
- Fluoride
- Aging and genetics
Dry mouth – a result of breathing through your mouth when you sleep, your teeth need saliva for enamel protection
Thankfully there are ways to brighten your smile without resorting to white strips, which can erode your enamel over time and can in some cases make your teeth incredibly sensitive. While citrus is one of many natural routes to a brighter smile, it can in some cases be too acidic for teeth.
Young Living Citrus Oils do not lower pH like fruit juice or fruit, and are less likely to cause acidic erosion to enamel – see the lab results by heading here.
One of the routes I have personally taken is orange essential oil and Thieves Aromabright toothpaste. Give it a try – you might find that it works for you too!
