The first few weeks following your baby’s delivery can be a total struggle ~ while you are captivated by their cute little size, and just want to snuggle and kiss them all day, your nipples can get dry and cracked from breastfeeding.
I loved breastfeeding all of my kids – and now that I’m on the last of 5, I’m trying to soak up every minute that I can. I’ll be very sad for the day that she stops… because it signals that she’s getting bigger and growing up.
That first week or two is incredibly challenging – you are tired, trying to breastfeed around the clock, maybe pump extra, and for some of us, trying to manage the rest of the family at the same time. Women truly can multitask – we are pretty amazing creatures 😉
One thing that helped me when I was breastfeeding my babies is having this Boobie Butter – those times that you find your nipples getting dry and cracked, this is amazing to slather on. While the hospital did give me a small tiny tube of my own Lanolin, I always prefer making my own items because I can control what goes into them.
Making your own is rather liberating too!
This Boobie Butter we threw together is SO incredibly easy – from start to finish it took me just a few minutes. That’s faster than driving to the store!
Pull out these ingredients to make it yourself:
- Beeswax: Helps encourage new cell growth while also protecting the skin, locking moisture in.
- Coconut Oil: Fights off infections and supports healthy skin while also serving as a deep moisturizer
- Shea Butter: Moisturizes, protects, and helps support new skin growth.
- Lavender Essential Oil: Wonderful for supporting healthy skin.
As with any item you are applying to your skin, I would suggest wiping off the butter before feeding your infant – whether using your own homemade or commercial nipple creams, you certainly don’t want anything to affect their latch and willingness to nurse.
So please, wipe off any excess before the baby latches on to eat.
Boobie Butter for Tired, Cracked Nipples
This recipe made a 4 oz jar:
- 1 Tbsp Organic Beeswax Pellets
- 2 Tbsp Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil
- 2 Tbsp Organic Unrefined Shea Butter
- 15 drops Lavender Essential Oil (we use Young Living)
To make: In a glass canning jar, mix the shea, coconut oil and beeswax in the microwave, 25-30 seconds at a time until melted. Carefully remove from the microwave and let sit for 1-2 minutes. Add the Essential Oil and pour into your jar – allow to sit until cooled, avoid touching the top with your fingers.
We pick up our jars at Abundant Health – you can, however, use Ball Canning Jelly Jars, or even reuse a baby food jar that has been washed out thoroughly. This recipe made enough to fill a baby food jar (about 4 oz).
You can pick up labels for this Boobie Butter – we used Avery Labels 22807.
