I always struggle when my kids aren’t feeling well – it’s really hard for them to communicate exactly what’s wrong … and they usually want lots of snuggles and time with me.
While cough syrup is available over the counter at the drugstore or grocery store, we much prefer to skip over the commercial products to make our own. One of the biggest benefits to making your own at home is that you can control what goes in to your wellness boosters.
You also save yourself a trip to the store.
And when you have kids, that’s pretty stinkin’ amazing 😉
Winter is a popular time for kids to come home with the common cough and cold – many of their classmates struggle with coughing and sneezing, runny noses through the season and well into the spring.
Although an inconvenience, having a cold is a great way to help your child boost their immune system – each and every time they get sick and allow their little body to fight it naturally, they build up more immunity.
That is a great thing!
So what causes the common cold?
Many people assume that viruses are the culprit.. but they are actually not the “root” of your cold. Your health is controlled by several factors… and the root of a cold is actually in these areas below:
- Eating too much sugar, too many starches
- Lack of rest
- Emotional stresses in your life that are causing disparage to your immune system
Unfortunately in most cases, antibiotics will just kill the good bacteria in your intestines – when you do that, you upset your body’s balance that can make food allergies more likely. Overuse of antibiotics can cause the body to change so much that antibiotics don’t work as effectively against bad bacteria in the future.
Every time you upset your gut balance, then you start a domino effect into everything else – digestion issues, leaky gut, skin problems, the list goes on.
Alternative Options to OTC’s
Being the mama that I am, whipping up this immune boosting syrup is much easier and better for our kids than cough medicine – it works amazingly well and within no time, they will be back on their feet.
Try this apple cider vinegar & honey immune booster – one spoon for kids each hour or two, and two spoons for adults eery few hours.
Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar is a product derived from the rendering of apples. As such, the product contains an array of essential vitamins and nutrients carried in a slightly acidic liquid.
These nutrients help restore the body’s natural defenses while the acid in the liquid helps equalize the pH in the body, also treating a sore throat and any other existing illnesses.
Raw Honey: Powerful antiviral and antimicrobial properties. In recent studies, has proven to be just as effective as over the counter meds. Wonderful for supporting seasonal relief.
Ginger & Lemon Vitality: Used to support a healthy immune system, and provide respiratory support.
You will want to grab a canning jar that you use as a cup – and on the lowest power, melt the honey until it’s syrupy. Hopefully you know how to use low power on your microwave 😉
Apple Cider Vinegar & Honey Immune Booster
- 2 Tbsp raw honey
- 2 Tbsp distilled water
- 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 drop Ginger vitality essential oil
- 1 drop Lemon vitality essential oil
In a cup-size canning jar, add the raw honey and place on the lowest power in the microwave until it becomes more syrupy. Remove, and add the distilled water, cider vinegar and essential oils.
Keep tightly covered when not in use – serve 1 spoon to your children each hour, 2 for adults. For the best benefit, don’t make too much at once – only make what you can reasonably use in a short period of time.
